Primarily there are three things that fight for our attention when we listen to music - the melody, the rhythm and the harmony, but there are many other things such as dynamics, tempo and the use of instrumentation that also affect our reaction to the music we hear. We will explore and analyze the various ways composers use the elements, or building blocks of music to help create an image of something or maintain interest in the music they write.
Program information for teachers to use prior and after the concert is available on-line at www.allentownband.com . By understanding works in context, students see ties between music and literature, history, visual art, and a variety of cultural influences.
